One of Fred's finest creations, this incredibly rare joyau with blue “laque de chine” details comes with all the matching extras. Each piece of the frame is stamped with the seal as proof of authenticity. Engraved serial number on the back of the right hinge.
The history of the jeweler Fred Joaillier is remarkable. The founder, Fred Feder, was active in the Foreign Legion during the Second World War, fighting against the Nazis; he was captured and escaped to Paris, where he continued his work as a jeweler. In December 1941, the Yellow Star was affixed to his store front and he was forced to remove the name Manuel from his store. So he called himself Fred, a name he kept, “perhaps out of defiance, perhaps so as not to forget those monstrous hours, perhaps also to preserve a salutary anonymity”.
In March 1942, he crossed the free zone, where he was imprisoned twice. At the beginning of 1943, he was released with the help of friends and joined the guerrilla resistance group “Maquis Vercors”, where he commanded the 17th company in the battle of Montélimar against a German Nazi battalion. Having changed his name, Sergeant Soulas, alias FredSammel, accompanied the liberation army through the Jura to Vesoul. He returned to Paris at the end of September 1944 and resumed his famous jewelry store Fred.
His customers included Marlene Dietrich, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Grace Kelly. He adorned wealthy society, including Arab princes. He also worked with artists such as Jean Cocteau and Bernard Buffet. It was he who brought cultured pearls to France. One of his most beautiful colors, a delicate pink-cream, has since been called the “Fred color”. The “Force 10” line, which combines gold and steel, is still one of his best-known creations. Fred also designed the necklace of 23 heart-shaped rubies surrounded by diamonds that Richard Gere gave Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
